Felipe Mohando is a partner at Nobis, a tax consulting firm based in Tallinn, Estonia, founded by advisors with Big 4 experience. Mostly focused on transfer pricing and international taxation, the firm provides practical solutions to domestic and international tax matters, supported by legal and accounting services.

He is also the European partner of Xtrategia Group, a law firm management consulting network operating across Latin America. With more than 20 years of experience across South America and Europe — spanning big law, Big Four advisory, and senior management consulting roles — he brings a rare combination of legal expertise and international perspective.

I asked Felipe what led him to start his own firm.

"In 2024, I left the global professional services firm where I had been working and started my own consulting business," he told me. "And then my partner Hannes — who had also left the same firm — proposed we start what is now Nobis, to focus on transfer pricing and tax law. I said, that sounds exciting. Let's do it."

Together, they saw a clear gap in the market. Transfer pricing — the rules governing how companies price transactions between their own subsidiaries across different countries — had long been the domain of the largest advisory firms. As global supply chains grow more complex, smaller and mid-sized businesses face the same compliance requirements as large multinationals, but without access to the same caliber of advice.

"If you are working internationally and you have several different subsidiaries in your group that you are doing business with, you have to be very careful because there will be tax implications into how you are structuring your transactions within your own company," Felipe explained. "And you need documentation that shows to the tax authorities that you are not avoiding corporate income tax through modifying your prices."

The large firms, he says, are neither able nor willing to serve this segment of the market. Nobis is.

"We want to educate the market as to what is transfer pricing, why it's important, and why it's a big risk that you need to mitigate," he said. "And we want to deliver the same quality and engagement as the big firms — but without the fluff."

The second arm of Felipe's work takes him back to his roots. Through Xtrategia Group, he advises law firms across Latin America on management, strategy, and technology — bringing the experience he built leading a major firm's legal strategy for Central and Eastern Europe to firms that are ready to modernize how they operate. He describes the opportunity as a chance to help Latin American firms leapfrog a generation of management practice.

What shapes how Felipe thinks about building anything — a firm, a strategy, a career — comes back to a phrase from Eisenhower that he carries with him. "Plans are useless, but planning is essential."

Felipe went on to add "What happens is always much better and much greater and has more impact than what you have planned, because normally humans have very limited capacity for imagination."

He is, by his own description, somewhere he never could have imagined five years ago and genuinely happy about it.

"People should not worry about things, but they should do the work. Just having that moment to think about your business is the most important thing you can do as a leader."
