What if there was a flip side to accountability — one that doesn't start with checking up on people? One that delivers accountability as the natural result instead of something you do.
Accountability becomes the byproduct instead of the goal. A way in which people are earnestly excited and energized to be accountable.
Showcasing value does this. It changes the entire tone. It flips the script. The focal point becomes recognition, not surveillance.
The key is to change the question:
From: "What needs to be measured and monitored to hold people accountable?"
To: "What do I wish everyone knew about my team?"
The goal becomes "how can I showcase all of the work, volume, wins, and time my team puts into this?"
Do you still need measures in place? Yes, and when the purpose shifts, people's motivation to meet them does too.
People feel seen, heard and appreciated. They're excited to have their work showcased. They know that you know, like really know, all that they do.
And the more chances they have to show their value, the more naturally they meet and exceed standards, take ownership, acknowledge mistakes, take responsibility, track their work and focus on what's expected.
When the reality of their contribution is showcased, accountability takes care of itself.
