Ryan Gregerson is a family law attorney and founder of RCG Law Group in South Jordan, Utah. His firm handles the full range of family law matters — divorce, custody, adoption, and high-asset cases. He started the firm in December 2022, has grown it to a team of 21, was just named a Silver winner in the 2026 Best of SLC Family Law Firm category, and recently co-authored a piece for the American Bar Association Family Law Section on chronic availability and the information architecture challenges it creates for attorneys.

I asked Ryan what led him to start his own firm.

He had been a partner at a midsize firm — one he had joined as its very first associate hire, watched grow, and eventually left. The firm was good. The people were good. But as the firm scaled and more partners came on board, something shifted.

"As we started to add in other partners, I felt like we lost track of taking care of each other as much. It became a little more transactional. I wanted to try doing things a little bit differently — to be purpose first and values driven, with a belief that if I did that, then profits would come."

I asked what "purpose first" actually looks like in practice.

Ryan came across Simon Sinek's work years earlier and went through a formal why discovery process — first at his previous firm, and then again, from scratch, when he founded RCG. The difference was foundational.

"Our why is to inspire others to transcend their trials and build their best lives. Once I started with that foundation, then I added in our values — the how. And each time I've tried to bring on new people, I always look at it through the lens of: is this person going to harmonize with the why?"

That philosophy is not just framed and hung on a wall. Every morning, the team holds a seven-minute daily huddle. It ends with what Ryan calls core value gratitude — someone on the team, chosen at random, expresses gratitude for a colleague by naming the specific value they saw that person embody.

"It's a constant reinforcement that this really is important for our organization. We really mean it, and we really want to live it."

New employees spend their first hour with Ryan personally, walking through the firm's vivid vision — the why, the values, the three-year strategy, and how the firm differentiates itself in how it serves both clients and staff. That document lives on screens throughout the office and is revisited every year.

I asked about how he keeps the team aligned and accountable as the firm grows.

Ryan runs quarterly business reviews with each group — attorneys, paralegals, and admin staff separately — where everyone presents their prior quarter and sets goals for the next. He borrowed the structure from his time in tech, where QBRs are standard. He adapted it for a law firm context using the EOS framework from Gino Wickman's Traction.

He also described what he calls the plumber and the poet. Certain things in the firm are non-negotiable — they have to happen a specific way, like plumbing. Everything else is the poet's domain: legal judgment, client relationships, courtroom instincts. The firm holds the line on the plumbing and gives attorneys full latitude on the poetry.

One of those non-negotiables is a Friday phone call — every attorney calls every one of their clients, every week, without exception.

"We want all of our attorneys to do a weekly Friday phone call where they call every single one of their clients. Everyone."

I asked what he thought would be different by now.

"I like to set big goals so that it pushes me. Even if I don't hit those goals, I still pushed myself further than I would have otherwise. You set a big goal, you give yourself some grace when you don't meet it — and when you take a step back, you realize how far you've actually come."

He started from zero. Three years in, the firm is doing well. The foundation — the why, the values, the systems — is solid. The work now is building on it.
